Isles of Scilly – Autumn Migration

Isles of Scilly – Autumn Migration

Book now

What superlatives can we use for the magical Isles of Scilly? Renowned World over as a migration hotspot, and surely one of the best places in the Western palearctic to see species from ‘across the pond’ each autumn. October has long been the traditional ‘Scilly Season’, and this time of year still draws the crowds. With less people visiting these days, there is a greater opportunity for finding our own good birds, we have decided on a late October visit for our inaugural autumn tour. Standing at the edge of our archipelago, Scilly is geographically blessed to receive rare vagrants from all points of the compass. Unlike many migration watchpoints, weather is less critical here for producing something of interest. There can be few other destinations where good birds can turn up on any winds! Of course, those classic fast tracking Atlantic depressions are what we need for dumping a Nearctic mega, but each year Scilly also receives a plethora of American shorebirds too such as annual Pectoral and Buff-breasted Sandpipers and American Golden Plover. Scarcities such as Dotterel, Little Stint and Curlew Sandpiper often appear at this time too, and we will be grilling any wader flocks for that White-rumped, Semipalmated or Baird’s Sandpiper! Passerines are high on the agenda, with late movers and shakers such as Red-breasted Flycatcher, Yellow-browed and Pallas’s warblers, Little Bunting and even Red-flanked Bluetail all possibilities. Firecrest and Barred Warbler are expected at this time and of course some top American land birds can also reach Britain during this period – Northern Waterthrush, Red-eyed Vireo, Black and White, Yellow and Blackpoll Warblers being some of the more regular. Who knows what will make landfall during our visit? You can expect to see around 120 species.

DAY ONE
The tour meets at Land’s End for the morning flight to to St Mary’s. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes, and on arrival you will be met by Neil who will already be on Scilly, and transfer to your accommodation. After check in at Mincarlo Guest House, we will have time to make our first foray out into the field. The plan will be to spend the rest of the day birding on St Mary’s itself, but we will of course consider a trip off island if a rarity has been sighted and a boat is available.

DAYS TWO  – SIX
We will plan a daily itinerary each evening for the following day, but may not know until breakfast exactly which way we will be heading, as any up to date bird information available may alter our best made plans!  Most days we will venture off St Mary’s to one of the off-islands, and will aim to visit St Agnes, St Martins and Tresco at least once each during our stay, so that we get to sample all of the habitats available and see what each of the main islands has to offer. Great Pool on Tresco is a wader hotspot, and just the sort of place a rare sandpiper from America could turn up. St Agnes is a beautiful island with plenty of habitat for finding our own birds including the wooded grove at the Parsonage, and we could also end up visiting the island of Bryher if a good bird turns up there. Wherever we end up each day we are sure to enjoy our time exploring these magical islands, with an emphasis on finding our own birds as well as making an effort to catch up with as many good birds found by others as possible.

DAY SEVEN
Today we aim to spend the final morning birding on St Mary’s and catching up with any new rarities present. We catch an afternoon flight back to Land’s End, and here the tour will conclude.

TESTIMONIALS
The whole process from booking to getting back home was smooth and efficient. When there were weather delays they were dealt with quickly and well. I really like the all-inclusive nature of the tours and that I don’t have to book the tour and travel separately. I’d highly recommend Oriole to other birders.
