The Outer Hebridean Islands of South and North Uist, Benbecula and Barra feature on our popular new spring tour and following the success of this holiday, we have taken great pleasure in introducing an autumn migration tour into our programme. Extra-limital birding is becoming ever more popular in the British Isles, with many taking a pioneering approach to finding their own birds rather than joining the autumn crowds on Scilly. Our Shetland autumn tours in 2012 were a great success, and the next archipelago to explore is naturally the Western Isles. Distinctly fewer people venture here in autumn than the latter islands, and while its track record may not be quite as spectacular, who knows what better coverage might unearth? A group of birders have been covering the island of Barra during October for over a decade, and their pioneering exploits have turned up such remarkable rarities as Yellow Warbler, Scarlet Tanager [just missed on our 2014 tour!], Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Grey-cheeked, Hermit & Swainson’s Thrushes, Red-eyed Vireo and White’s Thrush as well as a string of scarce passerines such as multiple Blyth’s Reed Warblers, Rose-coloured Starling, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Yellow-browed Warbler and many more. Based again at the Lochboisdale Hotel, we will be able to make trips to Barra as and when good birds are found, while routinely birding the island of South Uist ourselves. Benbecula and North Uist offer fantastic opportunities for raptor and seawatching too, while autumn waders in secluded bays often include nearctic rarities. It will be no stone unturned as we embark on this exciting autumn birding adventure! Your tour leader will be Ashley Saunders and you can expect to see around 120 species.
