White-rumped Sandpiper
Our weeklong holiday in Counties Wexford and Cork offers an ideal introduction to birding in the Emerald Isle. We have produced an itinerary to encompass the very best sites, enabling us to maximise our enjoyment of this superb birding area. The tour is ideal for those who wish to brush up on their shorebird identification skills, as many species are present side by side, allowing good comparisons of sometimes difficult species. Everywhere we go in this corner of this friendly island, we are assured of smiling faces and an intoxicatingly gentle way of life. With such an abundance of estuaries and wetlands in the area we expect to encounter many species of shorebirds while suitable weather conditions should produce great passerine migration opportunities in areas noted for surprises. Seabirds are also likely to feature highly on our lists. It is the transatlantic species that Ireland is famous for producing at this time of year and we have timed the tour to coincide with the peak arrival time for transatlantic visitors. Our bases for the tour will be the Danby Lodge near Rosslare in County Wexford and The Celtic Ross Hotel overlooking Rosscarbery Estuary in County Cork. Our itinerary is flexible to take into account local tide times, weather conditions and the arrival of unusual species. The walks are over fairly easy terrain and average four miles per day. Your tour leader will be Alan Davies and you can expect to see approximately 110 species.
