European Roller

During this intensive birding break we will visit the big eight of Latvia – the best route for birding at this time of year. The tour is named after the grand prix type lay out of the route in a large figure of eight that will see us cover the whole of the country and a wide range of habitats from Liepaja in the west to Lubans in the east. Although still relatively unknown among western birders Latvia has an incredibly diverse range of species to offer and before long is sure to feature among the must do birding destinations in Europe. Our ground breaking tour has been carefully planned to visit at a time when all the breeding specialities are present and there is still a chance of one or two interesting migrants turning up. Our accommodation is in cosy and comfortable guest houses and traditional hotels and all are well located for our birding excursions. We will have plenty of daylight hours to search for the many special breeding birds, while you may wish to make use of the “Pirts” or Latvian saunas during down time. The terrain is mostly easy but biting insects might be an issue in certain areas and you can expect to walk approximately six kilometres per day. Your tour guide will be Karlis Millers who is a much respected birder and accomplished photographer. Karlis will be joined by another Oriole Birding Leader. You can expect to see approximately 175 species.
