Itinerary

DAY ONE
Fly London/Budapest. We meet with Gerard before the four hour transfer to Eastern Slovakia. We will stop for refreshments and to look for Eastern Imperial Eagle on the way. After checking into our hotel there will be the option to visit any nearby “active” owl sites as they should be calling well at this time of year.
Overnight Volovske Mts.

DAYS TWO & THREE
We have two full days to explore the Volovske vrchy, the Volovske Mountains. We will make several forest walks along marked trails in areas good for our target birds. We will need to walk several miles and almost surely be the only birders here. These mountains are blanketed in mature beech forests where White-backed, Lesser Spotted, Grey-headed and Black Woodpeckers are not uncommon. Areas of mixed forest are home to Hazel Grouse and Pygmy and Ural Owls, whilst Spotted Nutcracker, Tengmalm's Owl and Three-toed Woodpecker prefer the old spruce-larch-pine stands. More common songbirds include Crested and Willow Tits, Firecrest, Hawfinch and Common Crossbill. Raptors include Golden Eagle and Northern Goshawk.
Overnights Volovske Mts.

DAYS FOUR & FIVE
Today we drive a little way to the south to the Slovensky Kras Narodny Park, the Slovak Karst National Park, passing through areas with raptors and Great Grey Shrike. The best limestone habitats in the country are here as well as fine oak-hornbeam-beech woods. All in all, the terrain here is more rolling and gentle, than the places visited in previous days. There are also meadows, pastures, hill-steppe and a scenic gorge of Zadielska Dolina. Slovensky Kras offers us additional chances of any woodpeckers and owls that we may “missed” on previous days. Middle Spotted and Syrian Woodpeckers are particularly common here. Other birds include Eastern Imperial Eagle, Saker, Eurasian Eagle Owl, Wood Lark and Rock Bunting. Overnights Slovensky Kras.

DAY SIX
Today we cross into Hungary and drive to Budapest airport where the tour will conclude.
