Itinerary

DAY ONE
Fly UK/Budapest and upon arrival, we transfer by private vehicle to our first base in the Bukk Hills for a three-night stay. On the journey we will check spots known to our local guide for Eastern Imperial Eagle and stop for any other good birds we see.
Overnight Noszvaj

DAYS TWO & THREE
We have two full days to bird the broadleaved forests, orchards and clearings of these pleasant hills, mostly on easy walks. Fairly common birds include Collared Flycatcher, Hawfinch, Turtle Dove, Yellowhammer, Corn Bunting, both Short-toed and Common Treecreepers, Eurasian Tree Sparrow, Marsh Tit, the white-headed form of Long-tailed Tit, Serin and Black Redstart. Eight species of woodpecker are resident here including Syrian, Lesser Spotted, Middle Spotted, White-backed, Grey-headed and the mighty Black Woodpecker, and we have good chances of seeing all of them. Wrynecks, too, will be back from wintering areas and “singing”. Raptors include Lesser Spotted Eagle, Eurasian Honey Buzzard and Northern Goshawk. White Storks will be on their big nests in villages and, though less confiding, we should find Black Stork, too. Eurasian Eagle Owls will be calling, and we will visit regular sites for this huge predator.
Overnights Noszvaj

DAY FOUR
Today we head back westwards, our destination being the lowland birding paradise of the Kiskunság, a flat plain between the Danube and Tisza rivers. Much of this region is protected as a national park, with habitats including dry and wet grasslands, sand-dunes, farmland, pasture, marshes, gravel-pits and reed fringed fishponds. We will stay for three nights to give us ample time to explore it. We will not be in a hurry today – we will make several birding stops, with Saker and Imperial Eagle once again possible.
Overnight Kerekegyhaza

DAYS FIVE & SIX
The Kiskunság is a huge, mostly flat, area of varied bird habitats. Wetlands host colonies of Whiskered Terns with often Black and White-winged Terns, Garganey, Ferruginous Duck, Pygmy Cormorant, Great and Little Egrets, Purple Heron, and Black-crowned Night Heron, Eurasian Spoonbill, and both Little and Great Bitterns. Reed beds have Bearded Tit, Penduline Tit, Bluethroat, Moustached, Savi’s, Grasshopper and Great Reed Warblers.
Other birds hereabouts include Blue-headed Wagtail, European Bee-eater, Common Hoopoe, Eurasian Golden Oriole, and Little and Long-eared Owls. Late passage and breeding shorebirds include Black-winged Stilt, Kentish and Little Ringed Plover, Wood, Green and perhaps Marsh Sandpipers, Spotted Redshank and Little and Temminck’s Stints and Ruff. The “puszta” [lowland grassland] and farmland here are the best places in Hungary to watch Great Bustards – which should still be lekking. Raptors should include White-tailed Eagle, Montagu’s Harrier, and Red-footed Falcon and there will be additional chances of Saker. Other birds are Red-crested Pochard, Collared Pratincole and Stone Curlew. Mediterranean Gulls nest amongst the Black-headed Gulls on gravel-pit islands, and Yellow-legged and Caspian Gulls are both possible.
Overnights Kerekegyhaza

DAY SEVEN
Today, we transfer to Budapest Airport. If time permits, we can do some final birding before our departure. We arrive back in the UK in the early evening when the tour will conclude.
