Fly London/Joensuu via Helsinki. Upon arrival, we will be met by our guide for the short transfer to our hotel. The long hours of daylight will allow us to get out after dinner in areas around Joensuu for species like Corn Crake, Thrush Nightingale, Blyth’s Reed, Marsh and River Warbler, maybe even the rare Booted Warbler.
Overnight Hotel Green Star
We spend all day birding in the Joensuu area and elsewhere in North Karelia. In a good year all of the Finnish owls can be found in the area, though we will be a bit late in the season. However, on previous visits to the region we have seen Great Grey, Hawk, Ural and Eurasian Pygmy Owl even later in the summer. Other species could include birds like Red-necked Grebe, Great Bittern, Eurasian Honey Buzzard, Marsh Harrier, Eurasian Hobby, Common Crane, Little Gull, White-backed and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, Greenish Warbler, Red-backed Shrike, Common Rosefinch and Ortolan Bunting.
Overnight Hotel Green Star
After breakfast, we transfer from Joensuu to Lieksa with birding en route. Possible species include Black and Hazel Grouse, Capercaillie, Northern Goshawk, Black Woodpecker, Bohemian Waxwing, Common and Parrot Crossbill. Upon arrival at Lieksa, we check in at Hotel Puustelli. After a late lunch, we transfer to the log cabin hide for the night at Kontiovaara for Wolverine and with luck Brown Bear watching.

Time allowing, we will do some birding around Lieksa in the pristine Patvinsuo National Park, Reposuo Bog and some old growth forests looking for species like Willow Grouse, Three-toed Woodpecker, Red-breasted Flycatcher and Siberian Jay and maybe even the enigmatic Red-flanked Bluetail. After a late lunch, we transfer to Kontiovaara for another night of Wolverine watching.
Overnight Log Cabin Hide

In the morning return to the hotel in Lieksa for breakfast. After breakfast, departure to Viiksimo for Brown Bear and with luck Wolf watching. On the way, we may encounter other mammals of the north including Elk, Reindeer and Arctic Hare, as well as some of the breeding bird specialities. After an early dinner at The Boreal Wildlife Centre, we depart to the cabins for bear watching. We may even be extremely lucky and catch a glimpse of the scarce and elusive Wolves that forage from across the Russian border. White-tailed Eagles and Black Kites also sometime come to feed on the fish put out. The entire evening, and part of the next morning will be spent in hides, before we return to the lodge for a proper breakfast and well-earned rest.
