Introduction

Brown Bear Family

Our new summer tour to North Karelia, one of Europe’s least known areas promises a unique and spectacular all round wildlife experience. Karelia is a primarily a wilderness region situated on the zone of conifer forests and bog lands known as the Taiga, which conjures up images of exciting eastern breeding birds. But it is a region that is now also recognised as one of the best in Europe to watch large predators at a series of log cabin hides. These offer amazing photo opportunities, so be sure to bring you camera for this unmissable wildlife experience!! The area on the Russian side is a republic and the Finnish side lies at the easternmost point of the European Union with Joensuu, the capital of the province lying further east than Istanbul… The terrain is mostly easy though some walking is required on forest floor to and from hides and at this time of year, you must be aware that mosquitoes and other biting insects will be present. Your tour leaders will be Ari Latja and Neil Donaghy, who have collaborated together on several previous visits to the area. You can expect to see approximately 120 species of birds and a whole host of other wildlife.
