We are pleased to announce that we have struck a new business relationship with the Blue Boar Inn at Great Ryburgh where we will be basing our holidays from now until the foreseeable future. Great Ryburgh makes a fantastic birding base, being situated in idyliic countryside along the valley of the River Wensum. Water Meadows and woodland surround the village and there are many good birding opportunities for those who enjoy a pre-breakfast walk! Barn Owl, Eurasian Hobby and Marsh Harrier can be seen and the local wildlife group allows our clients access to their private hide and scrape! Other raptors such as Red Kite and Osprey use the valley as a fly way, and we have recorded Common Crane, Eurasian Hoopoe and Black Stork here in the past. For insect enthusiasts, Banded Demoiselle, when on the wing, can be easily seen along the river. We hope our clients will enjoy staying here for many years to come. With six en suite rooms, the pub is large enough to accommodate most tours, but fortunately an excellent small farmhosue B&B called the Dower House is located just around the corner for additonal accommodation if required.



If arriving by car, Great Ryburgh is located between Fakenham and Guist about 3.5 miles along the Norwich road A1067.  Approaching from Swaffham or Kings Lynn take the A148 towards Cromer on reaching Fakenham. Follow this bypass for 1.5 miles, turning right at the next roundabout onto the A1067 passing Morrisons on your right. Go straight over the immediate next roundabout, and then left on the next one towards Norwich. Follow this road until you reach the right turning to Great Ryburgh, the Blue Boar has a small sign on this junction. This minor road winds down towards the river for about 1 mile, and shortly after crossing the Wensum the Blue Boar is on the right. For Sat Nav users, the full address is

For those arriving by public transport, collection from Kings Lynn can only be made by prior arrangement. Ashley will deliver you to the Blue Boar Inn, dropping you back at Kings Lynn at the end of the tour.

The Blue Boar Inn
Situated in the charming Norfolk village of Great Ryburgh, near Fakenham, this traditional 17th century English country inn boasts low-beamed ceilings, an impressive inglenook fireplace in the main bar and offers a warm welcome to both regulars and new customers alike. The Inn has a long and varied history and this is reflected in the pleasantly rambling layout and differing floor levels of the building we see today. Like the village around it, The Blue Boar has seen many changes as the tide of history has swept by. Stories tell of secret passages to the ancient church and friendly ghosts that walk at night. Where coaches once stopped to change horses a delightful beer garden now sits, and the roar of the recruiting sergeant, calling on the locals to join the fight against Napoleon, has been replaced by the happy chatter of customers.


Since purchasing The Blue Boar in 2008 James and Laura have lovingly renovated this historic inn to create a unique blend of modern dining, first-class home cooking and traditional Norfolk hospitality. James and Laura have brought the very best ideas of contemporary food and drink, mixed them with a liberal sprinkling of old fashioned and local recipes, which has resulted in a reputation for excellence that is truly well deserved. As a native of Norfolk, James has been keen to champion everything that is best about the county and its wonderful local food and drink. The results speak for themselves.

Fine real ales from Adnams, Yetman's of Holt and the nearby Winter's Brewery compliment the seasonal specials and offer a unique taste of the East of England. The selection of wines and ales, like the menu, changes with the seasons. Therefore, we can't guarantee exactly what will be on offer when you visit.

The Blue Boar offers a total of six cosy cottage-style rooms, all with en-suite facilities. Each comfortably appointed room has:

•    A flat-screen TV with remote.
•    Tea & coffee making facilities.
•    Hairdryer.
•    Free Wi-Fi Internet access.

Using only the very best of locally sourced ingredients the Head Chef, James, is proud to showcase the very best that his home county has to offer. However, 30 years experience gained all over the UK, Bermuda and Australia means that James' menus are anything but provincial. Fresh fruit and vegetables are sourced from local independent growers and at nearby markets and farm shops. Pork is supplied from the farm shop right next door, whilst the award winning Beef is locally reared at Binham. In season, fresh mussels and crabs come direct from the coastal village of Brancaster, whilst our free range eggs are sourced from the village of Great Ryburgh itself and herbs are freshly picked from the Inn's own gardens. It couldn't be more local if James had grown it all himself. James is truly passionate about offering only the very best in local food and goes out of his way to create a truly satisfying dining experience. Seasonal specialities such as marsh samphire, asparagus, fish and game mean that, whether you choose to eat in our cosy bar, relaxing garden or stylish restaurant, every visit to The Blue Boar Inn will be a delightful surprise.

Breakfast includes full English option, lunches will consist of sandwiches, fruit, cake and a flask of hot drink and evening meals include any two courses from a multi choice menu. A wide range of alcoholic and soft drinks are available at the bar and tea and coffee making facilities are available in every room. Packed lunch on day seven is included in your tour cost.

*Please note that the Blue Boar does not serve meals on a Tuesday evening, and we will travel a short distance to a nearby restaurant for dinner instead.
