Introduction

Hazel Grouse

Many parts of the Baltic states remain as they were fifty years ago; beautiful , tranquil countries full of wild flower meadows, wide, unspoilt wetlands and mature primeval forests – a must for anyone interested in birds, but also perhaps other wildlife. Each individual country has its own unique character and language, but make an excellent combined destination for a bird tour. Thousands, perhaps even millions of waterfowl are heading to breeding grounds in the far north and east and we hope to encounter plenty of action as we visit the Baltic Coast. These may include rarer species such as Red-breasted Goose, Lesser White-fronted Goose, Steller’s Eider and White-billed Diver as well as vast numbers of Long-tailed Ducks, Common and Velvet Scoters, Bewick’s Swans and Barnacle and Greater White-fronted Geese. Each country has it’s own unique character and the range of habitats ensure that we will have a richly diverse array of species during our holiday. With our good friends at Finnature, we have planned our visit carefully, and we also hope to encounter a vast array of waterfowl, warblers, woodpeckers, grouse and shorebirds with speciality species including The terrain is mostly easy, and we will walk approximately four miles per day. You may need to climb one or two tower hides, to a height of approximately thirty metres to get maximum enjoyment from the trip and therefore a reasonable level of physical fitness and a head for heights is required for this holiday. Your tour leader will be Antero Topp who has vast experience of birding both Estonia & Latvia. You can expect to see 200+ species.
